Russia has always been a world leader indeveloping new technology.
Recently, the country has alsodistinguished itself in developing robottechnology. A now-famous robot, the R.BOT100, was the brainchild of a Moscow company,3Detection Labs, which was set up in 2005.
Since then, the R.BOT 100 hasrevolutionised the classroom. How? Not byreplacing the teacher, as you might expect,but by ‘standing in’ for sick pupils.
In 2011, a Twelve-year-old Moscow schoolboy, Stepan Supin, was confined to his homeby a serious illness. But that didn’t mean he had to miss lessons. Stepan could interactwith his classmates and teacher via his home computer thanks the R.BOT 100’stelepresence technology; this includes a webcam, microphone, speakers and an Internetlink. Apart from being Stepan’s eyes and ears in the classroom, the robot was also calledStepan by his classmates. They thought it was a bit strange at first but soon got used tohaving his ‘double’ around.
It’s not only sick children who benefit from robots like these. Under the ‘Erbot’ project,people with disabilities can also find them an invaluable way of working from home. Forexample, by hooking up with a robot using remote control, a disabled person could workas a store consultant giving customers information and advice. Housebound people arealso enabled to ‘travel’ and experience other places. They can ‘visit’ the White NightsFestival in St Petersburg or the Roman Colosseum and feel they are actually there!

Russia has always been a world leader in developing new technology. Recently, Russia has achieved success in developing robot technology. The first big success came in 2003 with ARNE and ARNEA. the male and female androids, or human robots. They were made by students from St. Petersburg University and the company called New Era. These androids were able to walk, talk, avoid obstacles, understand orders, and remember objects and colours. In 2(H)4, the St. Petersburg University team, using technology from ARNE and ARNEA, won the RoboCup championship in Portugal. RoboCup is a competition in which androids play football against each other.
The Russian company Android Robotics created a more advanced android AR-I00 Dobrynya in 2007. This robot was able to ski and dance. However, the real goal of android research was to make an android that could do human jobs, so in 2008 they created the l-VAN android series. These androids do the work of a security guard and a miner.
Russia is also creating robots for the public market. In 2008 the Russian company Robotronie created a robot suitcase called Tony. Tony follows its owner by tracking a card in its owner's pocket. Il is able to avoid obstacles so it doesn't bump into other travellers and if someone tries to steal it, it will sound an alarm.
