А Have you seen the TV series Lost? If you have, you’ll knowthat it’s about a group of people whose plane has crashed on aremote island. They seem to find it quite easy to find food, buildshelters and protect themselves from storms in the thick jungleon the island. But suppose you were lost in the jungle – would itbe easy for you to survive?
B A jungle can be difficult to walk through! So, use a stick topart thick vegetation and to see and avoid any poisonous spidersor insects. Trekking in the jungle can be hot work. But if you arewearing long trousers and long sleeves, don’t be tempted to changeinto shorts and a T-shirt. You don’t want to get mosquito bites!
C What can you eat when you’re lost in the jungle? Well,you might find some fruit to eat in a tropical forest, but howabout some nice juicy creepy-crawlies as well? You might turnyour nose up, but insects are an amazing source of protein andare low in fat. One warning, though! Avoid brightly colouredinsects, which are usually poisonous.
D Storms in the jungle are not uncommon so keep your eyesopen for them. Some tropical forests get up to ten metres of rainin a year – about the height of a four-storey building – and mudslides are common, too. So, if you don’t want a mud bath,stay away from steep hillsides when you see dark thunder clouds!
E After a tropical storm, there is always plenty of water todrink in the jungle. Perhaps you can drink some of the rainwaterthat you will find held in the cupped leaves of some plants. Or ifyou follow the tracks of animals you might find the stream theydrink in. But use that box of matches you carry to light a fire andboil the water first. You want to kill any germs in it!
F It’s not that difficult to build a shelter in the jungle so youcan protect yourself from the weather and the animals! You canconstruct a tent using tree branches and sticks. More simply, ifyou have a plastic sheet and a rope with you, you can fix amakeshift tent between two tree trunks. At least you’ll havesomewhere warm to sleep.
G Never lose hope if you’re lost in the jungle. Hopefully, youwill see a small aeroplane flying overhead and get your chanceto signal for help. That piece of broken bottle you found shoulddo the trick! Simply hold it up to the sun and move it so thatsunlight reflects off it towards the plane. That should get thepilot’s attention!

Are you lost in the jungle?

But suppose you were lost in the jungle — will it be as easy for you to survive?
First things first, a jungle can be difficult to walk through! So, use a stick to part thick vegetation and to see and avoid any poisonous spiders or insects. This trekking will be very hard on your body, however, and will make you hungry.
