Speaker 1
George Washington was the first President of the United States of America. He was president from 1789 to 1797. Under his leadership American colonies became free from Great Britain. Washington comes from a fairly rich family. His parents owned tobacco plantations. He had a career of a military officer and became very successful. As a president he wanted his country to be strong and powerful. After his death, Americans called him “first in war, first in peace, and first in the hearts of his countrymen”. Washington is considered to be a symbol of freedom all over the world.
Speaker 2
Harry Truman was the thirty-third President of the US. He became president at the end of the Second World War in 1945. His name is connected with the idea of Cold War. He helped to found the United Nations Organization. In his work Truman listened to the opinions of the members of his cabinet and didn’t like to keep personal control of all important problems. He was one of the most unpopular presidents to leave the White House.
Speaker 3
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th President of the US. He was born in 1809 and died in 1865. He was president of the country in its most difficult period of the development, during the American Civil War. He came from a rather poor family and was mostly self-educated. He was respected very much by his people. Under his leadership America said “no” to slavery. Abraham Lincoln was killed at the theatre. He is considered one of the three greatest US presidents.
Speaker 4
John Fitzgerald Kennedy was the 35th US president. He was born in 1917 and died in 1963. People often write and speak of him as JFK, which stand for the first letters of his full name. Kennedy is the only Catholic president and is the only president who has won a Pulitzer Prize. JFK often spoke of the need for all Americans to be active people of their country. His famous saying was: “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” He wanted all people to fight against wars. He is remembered as one of the most progressive US presidents.
