Yuri Alexeevich Gagarin is the first man in the world who flew into space in the Soviet spaceship “Vo-stok”. The date of the twelfth of April 1961 is now one of the most important dates for mankind.
Gagarin was born on the ninth of March 1934 in a small village of Klushkino not far from Smolensk. His parents were workers. The boy spent his childhood in his native village. On the 1st of September 1941 he went to school but in October German fascists came to the village and for two years there were no classes, no school, no real life. Yuri’s childhood was over.
After the war Gagarin’s family moved to the town of Gzatsk (now Gagarin) where the boy went to college and in 1954 began to fly planes. He was very good at it and achieved wonderful results as a pilot. Five years later together with some other young men he began to prepare for flying into space. He was chosen to be the first human to fly into space and spent 108 minutes there. Later he said that he had flown round our planet and seen how beautiful it was. “People, let’s keep this beauty and make planet Earth even more beautiful and not destroy it.” These are Gagarin’s historic words.
Gagarin became world-famous. This brave, open and kind-hearted man was admired and respected all over the world. He was invited to many foreign countries and visited 30 of them.
Yuri Gagarin is a real hero and a symbol of our country. He is the man all our people are proud of.
