My name is Gloria Sandford. I was a little girl during the Second World War. Those were hard times and we children didn’t have much fun. My granny sometimes took me to the cinema and I loved those evenings. It was just like a visit to a brighter and happier world. Those films gave people a chance to forget their problems at least for a while.
My granny turned our visits to the cinema into big adventures. I think she was the best granny in the world and told me wonderful stories about famous film stars and well-known directors.
My granny and I were big film fans and we really liked different kinds of movies, but my greatest love was definitely the musicals. The beautiful costumes, the lovely girls, the songs they sang, the happy endings — that wonderful world was a real contrast to the everyday life we had. Granny always brought along some sweets and she produced them just as the picture was about to start. It was absolutely fantastic — the film and the sweets.
After the film we went out into the streets. Everything was in darkness. Holding hands and talking nonstop about the film, we made our way home.
