Young Shakespeare
“The actors are coming,” cried young William Shakespeare. “The actors are coming,” he repeated again. He shouted those words in great excitement. William was 5 years old then. He had heard the words when John Shakespeare, the father of the family, said they were going to see the play in the afternoon. “A company of actors is coming to Stratford today which doesn’t often happen,” said John. “These actors are very special. They perform for the Queen herself. Now my boy, I must go to the shop. Your mother will bring you to see the play in the afternoon.”
William was happy. It was great to go and see the actors. He sang to himself a song he hardly understood and waited for the beginning of the performance.
In the afternoon William washed once more and put on his best clothes. He was ready and they started.
Everyone who was going to watch the play had places — mostly benches, but with some chairs in the front. William ran to his father, and John took him on his knee. Suddenly a man came out, looked at the audience with a smile and started to speak. The play had begun. William couldn’t say what it was all about. There were a lot of long speeches there and the boy couldn’t understand a word of them. But in between there was a wonderful man who danced and walked out on his hands to the music. And there was a fight between three men who fell on the floor and threw pots at each other. Everybody laughed. But as for William, he thought he had never seen anything so wonderful and funny.
After the play John Shakespeare sent for the leader of the company. William was surprised to see that he was much older than on the stage when he had danced and laughed in the play. The old actor asked William if he would like to be an actor. William thought a moment and said: “Oh, yes, very much so.”
