Aladdin is a good example of a pantomime. The story is hundreds of years old. Aladdin is the central character. There’s also his mother Twankey. Her husband is dead, so she has to wash clothes for money. In the pantomime her part is usually funny, and they choose an ugly man to play it. Twankey has a horse. This horse can talk and dance. It isn’t a real horse, but two men. One actor is the front legs, the other is the back. There is a beautiful princess too. A nice-looking young girl plays this part.
One day Aladdin meets a strange old man, Abana-zar. Abanazar says to Aladdin that he is his uncle, his father’s brother. But it’s not true. In fact, he is a bad man. Abanazar gives Aladdin a ring and tells him to find a lamp in a cave under the ground and adds that the boy must bring the lamp back. Aladdin finds the lamp but doesn’t give it to Abanazar. He takes the lamp and then his mother tries to clean the lamp, and the Genie of the lamp appears. Eventually the Genie helps Aladdin and his family. Aladdin marries the Princess and they live happily ever after.
This kind of play is always funny and never scary, it allows the actors to improvise and make jokes.
